Oral Hygiene And Preventive Dentistry

It’s important as part of your dental care to consider preventive dentistry – the modern way of helping you and your family keep a healthy mouth and have a better smile. The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease and the better we prevent or deal with these two problems, the more chance you have of keeping your teeth for life. Good Dental hygiene is an essential part of healthy teeth and gums. Our Dental hygienist is specially trained to work as part of the dental team. Care from our hygienist is concentrated around preventive dental health and treating gum disease – showing you how to care for your teeth at home with some of the latest technology and helping to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What is the hygienist’s role in the practice?

The hygienist’s main role is to professionally clean the teeth for the patient.  This is usually called scaling and polishing.  However, perhaps their most important role is showing you the best way to keep your teeth free from plaque. The hygienist will work with your dentist to provide care tailored to your needs.

Can the hygienist help prevent dental disease?

Yes. By carefully removing the deposits that build up on the teeth (tartar) and teaching you how to prevent it reforming again, will go a long way to slowing the progress of gum disease. By discussing your diet and recommending other preventive measures, your tooth decay can also be slowed down.

We recommend that you follow these simple steps to help keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  • Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  • Visit your dental team regularly, as often as they recommend.
  • Chew sugar free gum for at least 10 minutes per day
  • Fissure seals – help to prevent build-up of decay
