What is an implant?
Dental implants are a treatment that can provide you with the closest thing to natural teeth, helping you to feel confident when smiling and eating, and avoiding some of the problems experienced when wearing removable dentures. A dental implant is a titanium post which is securely placed into the jaw as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth or teeth.
What dental implants can do
- Replace 1 or more teeth without affecting neighbouring teeth
- Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a partial denture
- Provide support for a denture, making it more secure, comfortable and long lasting.
Benefits of dental implants
Greater self confidence and Quality of Life – By giving you back your smile, you will not only feel more confident but you will look great too. Once the dental implants are fully integrated into your jaw, they function as well as your own natural teeth. You can eat what you want, in turn meaning that your digestion and health will be greatly improved.
Reliability – Dental implants have been used for over 30 years to replace missing teeth and can last a life-time as long as they are looked after.
Parts of a dental implant
Crown : once the implant and abutment are on place, the crown is fitted.
Abutment : a titanium or ceramic component which is used to connect the crown to the implant, an interface
Implant : a small titanium implant is placed in the jaw to replace the missing root of the tooth.
The benefit of a titanium implant is that it attracts bone cells which grow around it and “knit” to the bone, making it like a part of the body itself.
Timeline for implant treatment:
If there are no complications, and the implant is placed and has “knitted” with the bone :
- After 12 weeks, an impression is taken for the abutment
- 2 – 3 weeks after this, the abutment and crown are fitted.
So generally 3 appointments, then follow up visits to ensure all is well.
